Robert M. Place's Buddha Tarot, long out of print and now back in a full deck and book set from Red Feather, takes on an ambitious comparative project: finding the Buddha's journey to enlightenment within the structure of the tarot's Fool's Journey. Rather than simply decorating tarot cards with Buddhist imagery, Place examines how the two traditions grew from related philosophical roots and what each illuminates about the other.
The 288-page full-color companion book covers the history of tarot from its medieval origins through its modern forms, traces the influence of Platonic and Neoplatonic thought on Western magical traditions, and then examines Buddhist teaching from a Western perspective, drawing out the parallels with tarot in detail. Each card description includes close attention to symbolism and how it relates to both traditions. As Place writes, this deck is about what Western mystical heritage and Buddhism share, and about discovering that the tarot can function as a sacred mandala.
