The American Renaissance Tarot

The American Renaissance Tarot

The American Renaissance Tarot is a deck with a specific literary and historical thesis: that the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-nineteenth century United States, with its celebration of the human spirit and its struggle against slavery, maps naturally onto the tarot's archetypal structure. The Major Arcana pairs tarot figures with writers from this period, Emerson as the Magician, Whitman as the World, Thoreau as the Hermit, and short chapters with each card explain the connection.

The court cards of the four suits are voiced by Herman Melville, Frederick Douglass, Edgar Allan Poe, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, each sharing stories through the Minor Arcana that reflect their work and the cultural forces shaping it. The deck covers more than thirty writers active between 1825 and 1875, treating literature as a form of metaphysical inquiry continuous with the tarot tradition.
