The Cthulhu Dark Arts Tarot draws on H.P. Lovecraft's mythology of cosmic gods and monstrous entities that predate human civilization and have come to reclaim the world. Design duo Førtifem took that source material and built a full 78-card tarot around it, with illustrations that were first drawn entirely by hand before being scanned and colored digitally. The production quality honors both the illustrations and the mythology they interpret.
The format chosen for this deck is notably larger than a typical divinatory tarot — closer to the dimensions of early Renaissance decks like the Visconti-Sforza — which gives the already formidable imagery even more presence. A 32-page booklet is included to support interpretation of each card.
Maxime Le Dain is a recognized scholar of the Lovecraft mythology. Adrien Havet and Jesse Daubertes work together as Førtifem, a Paris-based design and illustration duo who began as graphic designers before combining forces around a shared love of detailed illustration. Their distinctive style draws on the weight of tattoo linework and the meticulousness of historical engraving. They have created visual work for bands including Rammstein, Slipknot, and Trivium, and for clients including HBO, Ubisoft, Cartier, and Le Monde. Their personal work has been exhibited in Paris, Los Angeles, and Hong Kong.
