Todd Alcott's Horror Tarot draws on over a century of horror visual culture, pulling from movie posters, fan magazines, paperback covers, comics, and pulp publications to build a 78-card deck that feels like a walk through the history of the genre. The full Major and Minor Arcana are here, all four suits, all with that familiar horror atmosphere that Alcott calls cultural mashups and midcentury mayhem. The box is designed to look like a book, which makes it as much a display object as a reading deck.
Todd Alcott is an artist who works with mid-twentieth-century visual culture, remixing and recontextualizing images and ideas to create work that makes viewers look twice. He has created art for Elvis Costello's Armed Forces box set, produced a full book of visual mashups for They Might Be Giants, designed tour posters for Patton Oswalt, and worked on album covers for numerous bands.
