Tarot of the Alchemical Magnum Opus

Tarot of the Alchemical Magnum Opus

Robert M. Place first established the connection between alchemical symbolism and traditional tarot imagery in his earlier Alchemical Tarot, and this deck carries that investigation further by paring the imagery down to its most essential forms. Where the earlier work used fully realized scenes, here the images are simplified and concentrated, pointing directly toward the alchemical processes they represent, the transmutation of matter as a metaphor for the refinement of inner wisdom.

The cards use a four-color palette, black, white, blue, and red, evoking Renaissance printing methods with three cards also incorporating yellow for specifically alchemical purposes. The colors connect to simplified forms from ancient Greek alchemy that shaped Western symbolic art for centuries. The set comes in a cloth-covered two-part box with gold-edged cards and curved corners.
