Solita Tarot is a debut of unusual ambition and seriousness: a first edition limited to only 100 copies, created from 92 original analog collages that Sóla Saar made over an extended studio process of immersion in archetype, myth, and psychological symbolism. The final 78 cards were carefully selected from that larger body of work, giving each image a sense of having been chosen rather than composed to fit a template. The cards are borderless and many compositions unfold across vast landscapes and cosmic expanses, allowing even the Minor Arcana to feel mythically scaled. Saar draws from classical mythology, vintage printed matter, Old Hollywood glamour, and the natural world, layering these references into images that carry real symbolic precision. The deck includes artistic nudity used as symbolic rather than decorative content. Astrological correspondences are integrated throughout and clearly listed for each Major Arcana in the guidebook, and the archetypal structure from Fool to World remains fully intact.
Sóla Saar is a collage artist, arts writer, and novelist who completed her undergraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley and received her MFA in Fiction from Columbia University in 2018. Her collage work has been exhibited at Harkawik, Roberts Projects, the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, Dominique Gallery, and Head2Head Salon. A selected image from the deck is scheduled to appear at The Morgan Library and Museum in New York.
