Yury Shakov built his reputation on lacquer miniature painting and the folk and fairy tale traditions of Russia, and every one of these 78 cards shows it. The compositions are painted in rich, saturated colors set against black grounds and framed in oval borders, calling to mind the jeweled elegance of Imperial Fabergé eggs. Traditional tarot archetypes appear here through the imagery of Russian history and culture, making this a genuinely original interpretation of the tradition. Shakov was born in Baku in 1937 and studied art in Moscow and Palekh. His works are held by private collectors and by the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
