The Cary-Yale Visconti Tarocchi is one of the oldest surviving tarot decks, and this 86-card edition makes its remarkable imagery available for study and use. Of the 86 cards, 67 are facsimile reproductions of the original 15th-century cards attributed to Bonifacio Bembo, held in the Cary Collection at Yale University's Beinecke Library. The remaining 19 cards were carefully recreated to fill in the missing portions of the original pack.
What makes this deck particularly striking among historical decks is its Court Cards: unusually for a deck of its era, it includes both male and female knights and pages, giving the court a rare symmetry. The deluxe edition includes a 68-page full-color guidebook with expanded card meanings by Stuart R. Kaplan and a detailed history of tarot by Thierry Depaulis.
